MP in war medal claim campaign

AN MP has made a renewed call to war veterans who served on the Arctic convoys to come forward to claim their long-awaited medals.

Thousands of servicemen served in the convoys, which played a vital role in the fight against the Germans in the Second World War.

But the convoys were never officially recognised by the Government until recently.

East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton presented several constituents with their medals last year and wants more to come forward to make their claim.

He said: “The awards ceremony we arranged last year was a great success and was enjoyed by everyone.

“It was an official recognition of those who played a remarkable role in protecting our country during the Second World War aboard the Arctic convoys and I am calling for others who have not applied for an Arctic Star medal to come forward so we can recognise their service as well.”

Mr Loughton can be contacted on 0207 219 4471 or by emailing [email protected]

Information and an application form for the awards can be found on the www.veterans-uk.info, or by phoning 08457 800 900. It is thought there are around 3,000 ex-servicemen entitled to the award still alive in the UK.
