New Coat released after two years in the making

The song, which was two years in the making, was played to guests at a launch party in the Fitzalan Howard Centre, in Pavilion Road, Worthing, to celebrate the occasion.

Jo McCaffrey, community liaison officer for Worthing Scope, said: “The pupils met repeatedly with users of our services, talking about what they liked and experiences in their life.

“The key thing was not for it to be ‘we have a disability, feel sorry for us’ but for it to be about people. A disability is just a condition it doesn’t define these people.”

Thirty-six adults with Cerebral Palsy and other physical disabilities use Worthing Scope’s services daily.

The charity is independent, which can cause confusion, according to Jo, as it shares its name with the national charity Scope.

The creation of New Coat was aided by international artist and Northbrook College staff member Emily Baker, and recording took place at the college’s music facilities.

Steve Jeffery, Worthing High School learning assistant head teacher, said: “We try and support any charity or nursing home within our immediate area.

“For our musicians learning how to work in a studio was an amazing experience.”

Emily Coles, 15, was involved in the songwriting process.

She said: “It’s a happy song to celebrate the people here.”
