New service highlights dangers of drinking

A NEW service is being launched in Worthing to raise awareness of regular excessive alcohol consumption.

It is designed to support those who are putting their health at risk and will offer personalised one-to-one help at a variety of venues.

A similar service will run across Adur.

One in five people over the age of 16 are in danger of an increased risk of cancer, heart attack, high blood pressure and liver problems as a result of regularly drinking more than the recommended levels.

Each year more than 4,000 people from Adur and Worthing are admitted to hospital as a direct result of their drinking.

Dr Rani Dhillion, GP at Lime Tree Surgery in Worthing, said: “Most people who have alcohol-related health problems aren’t alcoholics. They’re simply people who have regularly drunk more than the recommended levels for some years. It’s important that people realise that regularly drinking more than the recommended daily limits does risk damaging your health.”
