New Sunday South Downs services prove popular

REVISED Sunday bus services across the South Downs have proved popular.

South Downs National Park Authority is hoping people will continue to use them, so the bus companies keep them running.

Sunday services have been reintroduced or extended, thanks to funding from the Department of Transport.

The authority said there had been a great response on the four services in West Sussex, four in East Sussex and two in Hampshire. These include the No.1 bus from Worthing to Midhurst, via Washington, which becomes the No.92 bus to travel on to Petersfield on Sundays.

The funding has also covered free wi-fi on all Metrobus services in Sussex, including on the No.23 bus from Worthing to Horsham, which also goes via Washington.

Allison Thorpe, who leads the authority’s strategy on access and recreation, said: “Early figures show that new Sunday services are already being taken advantage of and we’ve even received thank you letters from some residents previously cut off without public transport for one day every week.

“This is great news as we need people to keep using the buses – the government funding is limited and in the longer-term both bus companies and community bus groups can only run services that are profitable.”
