A NEW health centre in Shelley Road, Worthing, is still on the prescription list, according to a current planning application.
Eighteen months ago, Stereopsis Ltd, of West Parade, Worthing, successfully applied to Worthing Council for a “lawful development certificate” to convert the former United Reformed Church into a large polyclinic.
Since then, weeds have thrived around the 1900-built listed building, which has been vacant since 2007.
Now, the planning agent, Plainview Planning Ltd, of Horsham, has applied for permission to build a diagnostic centre and hydrotherapy pool in the building’s rear car park.
Three diagnostic rooms and two changing rooms would also be included in the single-storey addition, which would “enhance the range of facilities available at the health centre”.
The original application for development approval said the church’s two existing ground-floor halls would be sub-divided to accommodate 10 consulting rooms, while a further 20 consulting rooms would be provided by creating a new first floor.
The initial application said the new health centre would offer a “full range of health services”, including a retail pharmacy.
Dwindling congregations and funding forced the building to close as a church in 2005, and it was then used as a school for two years.
