New Worthing ambulance depot will help hospitals

A NEW ambulance depot based in Goring will offer support to nearby hospitals as well as employment opportunities for Worthing residents.

Healthcare specialist Westhouse Medical Services has opened a new depot in the Martlets Trading Estate in Martlets Way to add to its AST Ambulance Service division.

The depot will support hospitals in the south of England – including Worthing and St Richard’s hospitals – by providing a patient transfer service to and from premises.

However, the new depot will not respond to emergency 999 calls, unless the NHS requires AST’s services in the future.

Jack Kaye, chief executive for Westhouse Medical Services, said he hopes to expand the Worthing base – which currently consists of six vehicles and 10 fully-trained staff members – in the future.

“We do currently have the equipment to provide intensive care and bariatric transfers,” he said. “However, the hospitals currently do not require these services. We hope to build up a good working relationship with them so we can expand our service and provide more jobs for the local community.”

Mr Kaye added: “We do respond to emergency calls for the London Ambulance Service, but this is not something which is required by the hospitals in this area. However, we would be happy to support them if they should require it.”
