Worthing shoppers were dealt a blow when Primark was not the retailer confirmed to replace BHS on Montague Street, in Worthing.
Many Facebook users took their disappointment to the Herald’s social page saying they were ‘not happy’ about the news.
Worthing town centre manager, Sharon Clarke, confirmed there is ‘no sign of the retailer opening its doors in Worthing’.
She added: “The space was not big enough for Primark, who require a huge turnover – and are not expanding their stores.
“Online shopping is expanding and people only shop for budget items in the town, such as food and beauty buys,” she added.
The town centre manager also said that Primark require a 25,000 square foot store, therefore the space was not big enough for the popular retailer.
“We would all love to see higher market and popular stores coming to the town, but these are expanding online, as this is where there is higher profit margins.
“Poundworld have targeted Worthing for two years, therefore we are in great demand, which is positive and we would prefer to see Poundworld than an empty building,” she added.
