Not a whole ‘latte’ love for Broadwater Starbucks plan

IT was rumoured to be a McDonalds, a Nando’s and a Burger King.

But the former Barclays bank, in Broadwater Street West, Broadwater could become a Starbucks after a planning application was submitted on behalf of the global chain.

The franchise, which is seeking to open between 7am and 11pm, has received a mixed reaction from councillors, business figures and potential rivals.

Chief executive of Worthing and Adur Chamber of Commerce Tina Tilley said she had also heard strong rumours about the potential for a town centre branch but thought the Broadwater plans had pros and cons.

She said: “It is a double-edged sword. I think the investment shows it is an upcoming shopping parade but it is a great shame if the long-term independent coffee shops are badly affected. Hopefully, they should be able to hold their own.

“I think Starbucks will be attracting the student market with the colleges nearby.”

Nearby coffee shop Muldoons, in Cricketers Parade, could be one of the shops affected by the new competition.
