IAN HART: Does Prince William really deserve a trial by television?

While Sir Mo Farah talking about a famine appeal for East Africa was relegated to third item yesterday, Good Morning Britain chose to run with American President Donald Trump's tax returns from 12 years ago and mobile phone footage of Prince William disco dancing on a Swiss skiing holiday.

The stateside ‘Men in Grey Suits’ are clearly to out to get Trump, but it’s the media trial by TV of the Queen’s grandson that’s the most disappointing.

Already dubbed ‘Prince Workshy’ by sections of the media, the latest furore comes over his decision to not attend a Commonwealth Day service instead choosing to go on a skiing holiday with his friends in Switzerland.

The ‘national outrage’ was compounded with pictures of him ‘dad dancing’ in a Swiss disco whilst on aprés-ski duties. Time to lock him up in the Tower of London?

Nothing more than a storm in a tea cup. Even at the age of 34 he’s still very much a work-in-progress in his development as a royal.

He’s got a young family, which represents huge personal responsibilities, coupled with the fact that he also has to live his life in a goldfish bowl.

It’s 20 years since the life-changing events of his mother’s death and I’m sure it’s a personal burden he has to carry every day of life.

He has been criticised by certain quarters for only doing 13 official engagements this year to the Queen’s 24, but she’s top of the bill and he’s ranked number three. His time will come and I think if people actually looked into how he juggles family life and his official duties they would actually have huge admiration for him.

Tabloid TV has seen the mobile phone owner in the Swiss disco, who probably walked away with a few quid, while children in East Africa continue to starve.

Prince William will be a great king who will modernise he monarchy well into the 21st century. Witch hunts only serve to destabilise this process.
