IAN HART: Share your views about A27 developments

Earlier this week I was visited by a representative from the Offington Park Residents’ Association, who asked me to take part in a survey regarding the road proposals.

I was happy to answer the questions, all fairly academic – in my opinion a proposed four-lane dual carriageway from Lyons Farm to Arundel is unworkable.

The only real way forward is to upgrade the A283 from Shoreham to Washington and then link up via the A24 with the A280 Long Furlong before rejoining the A27 at Clapham and Patching.

I added that I wouldn’t be averse to the exploration of other options.

However, I can’t see any other solutions other than what has already been put forward.

People should try to not fall too much into the trap of hearing, and potentially believing, all the snippets that seem to come out on a regular basis.

Already this week I’ve been told that they are only going to have to compulsory purchase two properties on the A27 to complete the project.

Looking at the width of the Sompting bypass, I find it unlikely that the Upper Brighton Road, Warren Road and Arundel Road will take four lanes without losing more than two houses.

The other one which, while it made me smile, is even more unsustainable – two unconnected people have told me this week that the council will be paying out compensation to any local residents whose property prices will be affected by the road development.

Sounds extremely exciting but I think there’s more chance of Lord Lucan riding Shergar across Broadwater Green at next year’s carnival.

Despite the obvious answers, the survey is great idea and I would urge as many local residents to take part in it.

I only hope that when the association presents the results to the authorities they actually take on board what the local electorate thinks.
