ROTARY ROUND-UP: Join Gill on her Downs Link charity walk and raise money for Water Aid

This week, Gerald Illsley, from the Rotary Club of Worthing Steyne, gives an update on the latest and future goings-on.

The Downs Link follows two disused railway lines which ran from the Surrey Hills and on to the South Downs and down to the coast.

Since the local trains were cut in the 1960s the embankments and cuttings have changed to a green corridor for wildlife and people.

With butterflies fluttering in the sunny sheltered places, kingfishers fishing from the old railway ridges and bats foraging and nightingales singing on summer evenings, it’s a joyful, varied trail.

Gill Leslie, a Rotary member for Winchester, has used these routes to get to Eastbourne for our district conference, and raised money for charity in the process.

In 2014, Gill raised £2,000 for Christian Aid.

This year, she is off again to walk the 76 miles in October from Guildford to Eastbourne, and coming close to us at Upper Beeding.

This year, Gill’s chosen charity is Water Aid, an international organisation which transforms the lives of the poorest and most marginalised people by improving their access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene.

Gill said the walks are a fun challenge and she hopes local people will meet up with her along the way, or at the end of each day, to say hello and contribute to her chosen charity.

On Wednesday, October 12, Gill will start off from Southwater at 9am and walk to Henfield them on to Upper Beeding, covering about 17 miles in total on the day.

We hope to be there and hope you can join in too.

Another popular cause for Rotary is the fight against polio.

We started our efforts in 1985 and when Rotary started this challenge there were 125 endemic countries – now there are just two.

In 2015 there were 74 cases of polio recorded. This year there have been 18.

Through the Purple4Polio campaign, Rotary aims to reduce this number to zero.

We have some ideas to raise funds to fight polio and the big day for us is in February.

Please look out for more news about our local events and have a look at www.rotarygbi.org/what-we-do/purple4polio/menu for more information.

Why not come along and tell us about your ideas.
