In October a new service called echo (end of life care hub for Coastal West Sussex) was launched.
Staffed by trained nurses, echo is a 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week telephone support service which can be used by patients who are thought to be in their last 12 months of life.
It can also be used by carers, families or healthcare professionals as a single point of a contact with just one number to phone.
When someone contacts echo they will speak to a trained nurse who will be able to provide advice and support over the phone.
Where other services or healthcare professionals will need to be contacted or mobilised, the echo nurse will be able to do this on the caller’s behalf.
echo will also hold and update important information about patients and their care, ensuring that healthcare professionals providing care are better informed about what each other is doing to better meet the expectation and wishes of the patient.
A number of St Barnabas House patients are already using the service, and over the next few months we hope many more will be.
St Barnabas has played a significant role in the planning and delivery of this service, and I would like to say a big thank you to all of the staff involved.
Our clinical, administrative, business planning and IT teams have been hugely supportive in getting this collaborative project up and running.
To contact echo you can call 01903 254789 – 24 hours a day, any day of the year.
