TIM DREW: Fraudsters impersonating phone service providers

The fraudsters will try to obtain your personal and financial details, which will then be used to contact the genuine phone provider and order a new mobile phone handset. They will either intercept the delivery before it reaches the victim’s address, or order the handset to a different address.

Action Fraud’s advice is to obtain the true number of the organisation being represented and verify the legitimacy of the communication.

Meanwhile, Sussex Police report that one bicycle is stolen every minute in the UK, though the number of thefts locally have fallen lately.

However, fewer than five per cent of stolen bicycles are returned to their owners so, in the event of your bike being stolen, Sussex Police have asked you to help them either by reporting the theft online or at your local police station, or by calling 101.

Don’t forget to register your bike and get advice on security marking other items via the Immobilise website.

This is the UK National Property Register, which is supported by Sussex Police and other police forces.

Also, we will be offering free cycle marking services at our next NHW and Crime Awareness event in South Street (Worthing town centre) on Saturday, August 6, but please bring proof of identity such as a passport or utility bill if you wish to take advantage of this.

The West Downs NHW Task Force has been assigned the duty of organising and manning road closures at the Worthing Rotary Carnival Procession on Monday, August 29.

We expect a good turn-out by the Task Force members (as indeed was the case last year) but any assistance from other NHW volunteers would be very much appreciated.
