Thousands of spring bulbs have been planted in Horsham Park to commemorate 50 years of work by the Horsham and Crawley Samaritans.

The ‘Bulbs for Lives’ community project was a joint venture with Horsham and Crawley Samaritans, Friends of Horsham Park and Horsham District Council to mark the Samaritans’ 50 years at their current base in Denne Road, Horsham.

Volunteers helped to plant 6,221 mixed crocus and 6,221 narcissus bulbs to create a beautiful carpet of spring flowers in the park next spring and for many years to come. The number of 6,221 was chosen as it represents the number of people who took their own lives in the UK in 2021.

The flowers will also acknowledge the work that the Samaritans do, with the aim of reducing the number of those who tragically take their own lives.

The Samaritans service is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential support for anyone experiencing feelings of distress or despair. Call them free on 116 123.
