Members of a residents’ group for Broadwater Cemetery have said they were ‘upset’ to discover graffiti in the cemetery on two separate occasions.
Police are currently investigating criminal damage caused to headstones at the cemetery in South Farm Road after the graffiti was found last month.
According to police, an unknown offender had used red spray paint to deface memorials with graffiti, with slogans such as ‘I’m back’, and ‘catch me if you can’, the latter sprayed as single words across several headstones.
A spokesman for The Friends of Broadwater and Worthing Cemetery said: “We were upset to discover graffiti in the cemetery on two separate occasions at the beginning of May. The graffiti was reported to Worthing Borough Council who responded very quickly and made an excellent job of cleaning the headstones affected. The police were also informed.
“We are pleased to say that there have been no further occurrences since then and the Friends are working together with the council to assist the police in their investigations into the incidents.”
PC Robert Luff, of the Adur and Worthing Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “There were similar incidents last autumn, and this is clearly distressing for the relatives of those whose graves have been defaced.
“Anyone who has any information which may lead to the person or people responsible being arrested is asked to email email@example.com or phone 101, quoting serial 1401 of 22/05.
“Alternatively they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 (www.crimestoppers-uk.org).”
