AFTER several fires last month the council started work on Wednesday (June 6) to fill in the space under Worthing Pier where the incidents happened.
Shingle is being pushed back up the beach under the Pavilion Theatre, in Marine Parade, Worthing, using a conveyer belt system.
Worthing Borough Council hope the work will be finished by next weekend (June 16).
A council spokeswoman said: “We’re pushing the shingle back to fill the void underneath the Pavilion Theatre. We’re hoping to be completed before the jubilee party, on June 16, but it’s going to be as long as it takes to do the work.
“It’s basically, for us, a good opportunity to clean it out, because there is lots of rubbish and debris there.
“All of that work will help to reduce fire risks.”
