Residents dishonestly claiming a discount on their council tax could soon be found out.
Adur and Worthing councils are about to take part in a county-wide audit of single person discount, which gives those living alone 25 per cent off their council tax bill.
Steve Waight and Angus Dunn, Worthing and Adur cabinet members for resources, said: “The audit will help to identify where people are claiming discounts that they are not entitled to.
“We want to make sure that the discount is being given to those who genuinely live alone. People who claim a discount to which they are not entitled are cheating the system and placing an unfair burden on those residents who pay full council tax.”
Around 17,675 people in Worthing, and 6,066 people in Adur currently claim the discount.
The audit starts in the next few weeks and will last around five months.
