The Worthing household waste recycling site has been temporarily closed due to winds gusting at over 50mph.
The site, in Willowbrook Road, in Worthing, has reported winds being so strong that they have moved bulky items such as fridges along the ground.
A spokesman for West Sussex County Council said: “The site at Worthing has been affected by exceptionally strong winds, making it necessary to temporarily close it for health and safety reasons for the protection of staff and customers.
“The situation is continually monitored and the site will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so. Staff and public safety comes top of our list of priorities.”
According to the Met Office, wind speed at Shoreham – which is the closest observation point to Worthing – was 38mph at 1pm, and has reached 51mph gusts.
