POLL: Are you happy with the Montague Place refurbishments?

The brickwork in Montague Place has been under fire from the public since before it was completed last year.

Now, the council has insisted apparent wear and tear of the bricks is in fact ‘creases’ – but residents on Facebook have had other ideas.

Heather Morris said the revamped area was ‘a grubby horrible waste of money’, and Alan Brown said walking over the bricks made him ‘feel seasick’. Genienne Eames said it was an ‘awful pavement for wheelchairs’, and others feared the creases could be a trip hazard.

Many people wondered if the bricks would crack after a period of heavy frost – and John Robinson said ‘the gaps between the pavers make it look like a poorly finished job’.

Pearl Apted said: “It’s going to cost us a fortune in maintaince plus some of the drainage is badly placed.”

After sending Worthing Borough Council a picture of the bricks, a spokesman said: “Having spoken to the team at West Sussex County Council, the surface texture and ‘creases’ shown in your picture are part of the natural appearance of these clay paviours.

“We, and the county council, are of course keeping a watchful eye over all of the new installation to ensure that nothing unforeseen emerges as the block work naturally weathers in.”
