THREE faces have been attracting a lot of interest at The Eardley, the prestigious new development of two and three-bedroom luxury apartments on Worthing seafront.

They have made an impression that is set to last, and raised £10,000 for local charities in the process.

The faces of three people have been cast in concrete and given pride of place within the decorative detailing on the Victorian-style façade of the nearly-completed building.

Local residents have been trying to guess the identities of the now famous three, which are being kept a closely-guarded secret by locally- based developers Roffey Homes.

The opportunity to be involved in creating an ornamental figure for The Eardley was one of the prizes donated by Roffey Homes for auction at former mayor Ann Sayers’ Valentine’s Ball last year, in aid of her chosen charities.

Two other grotesques had been sold previously to undisclosed buyers. The monies raised have been presented to The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home, the RNLI, Sussex Air Ambulance, the Alzheimer’s Society and Worthing Churches Homeless Project.

Roffey Homes managing director, Ben Cheal explained: “We wanted to give something back to the community that was priceless – a once in a lifetime chance to create an enduring impression and be part of Worthing’s cultural heritage.

“Grotesques are often confused with gargoyles, but the distinction is that gargoyles are figures that contain a water spout through the mouth, while grotesques do not.

“They have been around since the time of the ancient Romans but became popular again in the Victorian era when the original Eardley was built.”

The Eardley has been designed by award-winning conservation architects, Arundel-based Neil Holland Associates, who proposed the unusual step of recreating the original period building. They conducted a minute survey of the intricate balustrade detailing on the old building and took precise details of all the architectural features, so they could be replicated authentically. The attention to detail extended to the mouldings and lead canopies.

Ben added: “It has always been our intention to create an inspiring tribute to the Eardley, which not only celebrates the town’s rich past but also embraces its vision for a brighter future. The feedback we’ve received from local residents and new owners suggests we have achieved our goal with this ambitious development.”

More than 70 per cent of The Eardley has been exchanged, reserved or completed and only 10 of the 34 purpose-built, two and three-bedroom luxury apartments remain, priced from £450,000.

Superbly positioned overlooking the vibrantly landscaped Splash Point and seafront at Worthing, The Eardley is a short walk to the town centre, the mainline railway station, and bus services along the coast.
