RESIDENTS rallied to restore pride to a neglected patch of land in North Lancing on Saturday.
Volunteers spent the day clearing the area in front of the Manor Road shops in North Lancing.
Councillor Carol Albury was the driving force behind the community effort.
“Having been elected to this area I am keen to mobilise the community in projects of this sort,” she said. “This is a great way for all of us to get involved with our local area.”
Mrs Albury and fellow councillor Keith Dollemore distributed flyers and said they were amazed by the number of enthusiastic volunteers that came out to help.
Residents brought strimmers, brooms, forks, shovels and trailers to help dispose of the debris.
MP Tim Loughton even arrived with his chain saw in hand.
The nearby shops provided refreshments and Chad’s Natural Meats gave all the volunteers a bag of sausages to take home.
“This was a much bigger project than I first envisaged and a huge thank you to all the helpers and to Adur Council for its support,” said Mrs Albury.
A community grant has been applied for from West Sussex County Council to rebuild the retaining wall which is in need of repair.
