A public IT suite has been opened by Sompting Parish Council with new computers and desks.

The suite, based at the Harriet Johnson Centre, Loose Lane in Sompting, is aimed at any resident, young or old, who does not own a computer or feels uncomfortable using technology on their own.

The suite has six computers donated by JSPC Computers, and has full Internet access so users can browse the web and check emails.

Mike Burton, 50, of Rectory Farm Road in Sompting, has volunteered to run the suite, having worked in an IT environment, helping people to overcome their challenges.

Mike said: “I had to retire from work because I was ill, and because I retired my wife decided it would be good for me to fill my time. I thought I have got some time on my hands, so decided it was a good time for me to give something back.

“The parish council sent out a newsletter and there was a little article saying they had put together the suite but they needed someone to run it. I have got the skills to help people in IT, but I have also managed teams in the past, so it was a good opportunity.”

The suite opened on April 20, and is currently open on Wednesdays from 10am to 12pm.

With the computers, there is also a projector, screen, PA system, DVD player, presentation easel and printer, and is also available for hire for businesses.

Mike hopes he can help users at the suite to be more confident when using the Internet and social media.

He added: “I am really excited to start. I feel I can give technical support to help people who are a little nervous, so it will be interesting to see who turns up.

“It would be nice if people from the village decided to go for a little bit even if people are just after a little help, or want to socialise, even if they have a computer at home.”

A spokesperson for the parish council said: “Mike is a great asset as he has worked in an IT environment and has experience in and enjoys helping people overcome their IT challenges.”
