A cancer survivor from Storrington is appearing in the latest advertising campaign for Cancer Research UK.
Anita Newman, 42, of The Green, is appearing in newspapers, magazines and at railway stations as part of the cancer charity’s campaign to launch its new identity and inspire people to raise money for life-saving research.
Anita, along with fellow cancer survivors, supporters and staff, appears in the big, multicoloured image of the ‘C’ at the start of the charity’s new logo.
Anita is also on posters being displayed at the Cancer Research UK charity shop in High Street, Steyning.
She said: “When the charity called and asked me to take part, I jumped at the chance. I still think a lot of people think it will never happen to them so it’s great to raise awareness.”
Anita was diagnosed with breast cancer after being bitten by a mosquito while on holiday in China in 2010. After returning from the holiday feeling unwell, she went to Worthing A and E where they found she had a severe infection. She was kept in hospital for six days.
Three weeks later, Anita had a routine ultrasound scan on the bite area, then biopsies and mammograms confirmed she had breast cancer. A double mastectomy and six months of gruelling chemotherapy and radiotherapy followed.
Anita was also sent for genetic testing and found to have the rare genetic disorder, Cowden’s disease, which increases the risk of certain cancers, such as breast and thyroid. So, Anita decided to have half her thyroid removed as a precaution.
Anita, a telecoms worker, said: “It’s thanks to research, I am still here. I am so grateful for the treatment that saved my life. Success stories like mine would not be possible without the work of Cancer Research UK.”
The new ads include the slogan “united we are stronger than cancer” and urges the public to “join the fight” to help more people like Anita survive.
Anita said: “The one thing that got me through was the support of family and friends, so it’s a great message.”
