TWO pupils have decided to devote one of their A level projects to the history of Lancing and Sompting during the years of the First World War.
Aidan Colwell and Ben Jones, of the Upper Sixth Form at Sir Robert Woodard Academy in Lancing, are researching the life stories of local people in the years leading up to the war, during the war and in the peace that followed the armistice.
With the information and photographs they are gathering, they plan to write up the local history and put on an exhibition for students at the academy to visit and learn from.
The pupils are completing this project as part of their Creative Media course.
Aidan said: “We have come to realise how important it is to know about our own local history when looking back at huge national events like the 1914 war and to appreciate how it affected local families and impacted on the life of the community.
“Finding out about this history is proving to be really interesting and also quite moving at times.”
In an effort to tap into local memory, they have distributed leaflets asking for anyone who knows of some family history from that period to contact them through the academy.
If you have any information or photographs that could be included in their exhibition contact Ben and Aidan by calling the academy on 01903-767434 and leaving a message for Mr Chandler.
