MORE than 100 swimmers donned their goggles on Saturday to take part in the annual mayor’s charity swim.

At the Worthing Aquarena, the swimmers collectively swam 5.7 times the width of the English Channel in support of the mayor’s charities – MIND, Acorn pregnancy counselling, Oak Grove College and the Lauren Jones Foundation.

The event kicked off with athlete Lauren Jones hitting tennis balls into the pool, and featured a superheroes’ swim and a live DJ. Oak Grove College students also took part in the fund-raising by holding swims during their PE lessons at their specialised pool last week.

Worthing mayor Ann Barlow said: “The only word to describe the swim was ‘mega’. Everyone said how much fun they had – one girl swam for four hours, she swam 300 lengths!

“I want to give a big thank-you to everyone who took part – these people were not just swimming, they were changing lives.”
