The housing developer made an unsuccessful bid for the site two year ago, it was revealed at a public meeting in Ferring last Tuesday, following a question from the floor.

Paul Bedford, senior land and planning manager for Persimmon Homes South Coast, said: “At the time we were looking at the residential element above the retail on the ground floor.

“If the land were to become available in the future we would look again at the residential element.”

The Teville Gate site, currently owned by Hanson Capital Management Ltd, is due for a £150 million redevelopment but work has stalled over ‘delays in paperwork’.

Councillor Mark Nolan was in attendance at the meeting, which saw 600 residents attend to hear Persimmon’s plans for two greenfield sites separating Ferring and Goring.

Cllr Nolan said: “Persimmon’s revelation clearly proves that the real barrier to redeveloping Teville Gate is the current owner.

“The pressure on the Borough to build more homes is increasing - we cannot allow our green open spaces to be lost whilst absent landlords squat on the brownfield sites.”
