Teville Gate spruced up as famous artist joins community effort

COMMUNITY-spirited residents refused to let the tail end of a hurricane defeat them as they gathered to spruce up a derelict Worthing ‘gateway’.

Fed up with Teville Gate going to rack and ruin, a team of volunteers picked up their paintbrushes and donned gardening gloves to de-weed and brighten the unloved area up on Sunday.

Led by Paul O’Brien, owner of I Love Candy, in Bath Place, the group weathered the wind and torrential rain of Hurricane Bertha, the remains of which whipped across the south east in the morning.

Mr O’Brien said: “For a lot of visitors, Teville Gate is the first thing they see as they step off the train and it’s an eyesore.

“It has been a brilliant community effort, with kids as young as two to us adults coming along.”

The group filled dozens of bags of weeds, painting bricks and posts in bright colours and decorated a closed-down shop front with ribbons and pictures of famous Worthing residents, among other tasks.

In an unexpected move, internationally-renowned artist David Freud, son of Lucian, turned up to paint a mural on the side of one of the buildings.
