IT’S not just planes that have been grounded by the wintry weather, ducks have been affected too.
While clearing the runway at Gatwick Airport, shocked staff came across a female mallard duck that had fallen foul of the bad weather.
The duck, which was exhausted, unable to fly and suffering from mild hypothermia was taken the Animal Reception Centre at Gatwick Airport by concerned staff who tried to warm the bird up.
The duck, called Snowy by Gatwick staff, was continuing to suffer from the effects of being out in the cold, so member of staff Carol Tibbets spoke to Worthing & District Animal (WADARS) rescue service officer Billy Elliott and on his advice she took Snowy to Grove Lodge Veterinary Hospital in Worthing where she was checked over.
The Mallard needed some further rest and recuperation and WADARS have arranged to take her to Brent Lodge in Chichester, which cares for sick and injured birds, so that she can fully recover from her snowy ordeal.
Tony Thorn from WADARS said: “Thanks to the prompt action of the concerned staff at Gatwick Airport Snowy the mallard should make a full recovery and soon be flying again.”
