Statement from Southern Water about East Worthing sewage spill

FOLLOWING a sewage spill at East Worthing yesterday (Sunday, September 2), Southern Water has issued the following statement.

A spokesman said: “A build-up of non-biodegradable debris blocked pumps at East Worthing Wastewater Treatment Works.

In order to prevent the works from backing up and flooding nearby properties, we have diverted some of the wastewater flows out to sea.

The remainder of the flows are being either treated on site or removed by tanker for treatment elsewhere.

We are working closely with the Environment Agency and Worthing Borough Council on this issue and both organisations have been kept up to date on progress.

Work is under way to repair the pumps and this continued overnight.

We can reassure customers that we are doing everything we can to minimise the impact of this incident and to get the site back online as soon as possible.

We apologise to beach users for any inconvenience this incident has caused.”
