Traders welcome TCI’s weekly market changes

As reported in the Herald this month, the TCI has reduced rents for regular stall-holders and spoken of its plan to encourage greater variety to make the market bigger and better.

And the new owners have gained the support of many traders, who believe it is a ‘positive step’ for the market’s future.

Flower seller Gary Erricker said it would be a ‘proper local market’.

He said: “It’s got to be a good thing for the town.

“The TCI is becoming more involved in running it locally and it will now be a proper local market.

“The better the variety, the more people will be drawn in. I do the Guildford market, too, and personally I think this one is much better.”

The market, which has 78 pitches, has been run by Town and Country Markets for the last 11 years but the company’s most recent offer showed a decrease in rent.

A vote was therefore taken by the TCI to run the market in-house.

Regular traders will now save £4 a week on rents, while a new entitlement to two weeks of holiday will be available.
