Usually it is centenarians who take the spotlight but two Worthing care homes have given 90-year-olds the chance to shine.

Worthing mayor Sean McDonald has been to visit two residents at Victoria Royal Beach, in Grand Avenue, and one at Windsor Rest Home, in Windsor Road, recently.

First, it was Amy Chalcraft’s turn, on Friday, July 8, then Clarice Greenway was treated to a visit on Sunday, August 14.

Tracy Bassett, manager at Victoria Royal Beach, said: “It was all part of the celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday. Residents who are 90 asked for the mayor to visit to tie in with Queen’s birthday.

“The mayor and mayoress came to visit Clarice and brought her flowers and a birthday card.

“Clarice had all of her family around her and had a lovely day.”

Today, Mr McDonald has been to Windsor Rest Home to see 90-year-old Edwin Webb, a former Royal Marine who recently received the Legion d’Honneur.

Mr Webb landed on Sword Beach on D-Day. He was in a landing craft and as he was landing, a missile went past his ear. He said he could feel the heat of it.

Mr Webb received a letter sent on behalf of the president of France thanking him for his ‘steadfast involvement’ in the liberation of the country during the second world war.
