An 85-year-old and a 58-year-old are being treated for smoke inhalation at Worthing Hospital after a fire broke out in Salvington at 6.30pm last night (February 29).
Three fire engines turned up to a first floor flat in Vinery Court, Rogate Road, after a smoke alarm alerted them of the situation.
Four firefighters tackling the blaze had to wear breathing apparatus, but all of the surrounding residents managed to escape.
A Worthing firefighter said: “Just as we were leaving the station we were warned that someone might be stuck in the building.
“When we got there smoke was coming from a first floor flat and one first floor bedroom was badly damaged.”
The cause of the fire is still unknown but the investigation continues.
