AROUND one in 20 cars checked in Worthing car parks were found to have defective tyres.
Police carried out the checks as part of National Tyre Safety Month in four of the town’s car parks.
Officers looked at 711 cars, a total of 2,844 tyres were examined. Information leaflets were left on 34 cars with defective tyres with a request to urgently attend to them.
PCSO Ed Mitchell, road safety officer for the Adur and Worthing district, said: “It is recommended that tyres are checked at least once a month and before any long journeys. This should include checking the air pressure, overall condition and that tread depth is at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre and around the whole circumference for cars.
“Drivers who fail to comply with tyre regulations face a fine of up to £2,500 and three penalty points for each illegal tyre.
“It is particularly important to make sure that your tyres are roadworthy as winter approaches as defects can significantly affect the performance of your vehicle on weather-affected roads.”
A joint operation between Sussex Police and the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) as part of the same safety campaign saw four vehicles prevented from continuing their journeys on the A27 near Lewes when their tyres were found to be dangerously unsafe. Their drivers were required to have new tyres fitted before being allowed on their way.
