THE council visited travellers at Halewick Lane in Sompting today to check up on their welfare.
The group, believed to contain around 20 caravans, arrived on Friday evening.
The land is owned by Adur Council which is undertaking a welfare assessment today to assess the situation.
A council spokesman said the assessment would ascertain that the travellers’ needs, the environmental impact of their presence and the loss of public amenity.
A decision will then be taken as to what action the council will take and a further update will be provided later today.
The police are aware of the situation.
