Sussex Police has confirmed the flat fire in Gratwicke Road, Worthing, this morning (Monday, March 19), which killed the occupant, is not being treated as suspicious.
Emergency services were called to the house at 5.15am and the body of a man was found in the first-floor flat. It is believed to be that of the 62-year-old occupant, who lived alone in the property.
Investigations have established that the fire was not deliberately ignited, and the cause is believed to have been accidental.
The next of kin of the deceased are in the course of being informed and it is hoped his identity will be released tomorrow (Tuesday, March 20). The coroner’s officer is continuing her enquiries and a post mortem will take place on Thursday, March 22.
