Volunteers needed for new project

VOLUNTEERS are sought for a new community project offering horticultural therapy.

Root to Growth has taken over Rock Farm, on the Wiston Estate, from Friends First, a Brighton charity supporting homeless people.

The six-acre site, at The Hollow, Washington, used to be a pick your own farm and was then run by the charity for three years as a meaningful workplace for long-term unemployed volunteers.

Zoe Colson-Spence is now setting up the horticultural therapy project and is in the process of setting up a website.

She gave a talk at Steyning 10:10 Climate Action Group last Wednesday, to explain a bit the project and ask for volunteers.

“We wanted to make sure we have got some really strong links with the community,” said Zoe.

The charity will be working with people from Brighton to Worthing and up to Horsham.

The previous charity at Rock Farm worked with a drug and alcohol rehabilitation unit and Zoe wants to expand that to work with broader mental health problems.

“I am keeping up running it from how it has been for now,” she said.

Brighton Permaculture Trust is helping to set up an orchard area and volunteers are busy redesigning the site with new archways and structures.

Zoe also asked for donations of wood, bricks and tiles.
