A surgeon has performed a knee replacement operation in just one day – setting what he thinks could be a ‘UK medical first’.

Heating engineer, Roger North, 62, entered BMI Goring Hall, in Worthing, at 7.30am and left, complete with a new knee, just seven hours later.

Consultant orthopaedic surgeon James Lewis, who carried out the operation, has said one-day replacements are ‘the future’ and will mean fewer people will have to stay in hospital.

He said: “I understand this to be the first walk in walk out knee replacement using this particular type of knee implant, but I am sure I won’t be the last.”

Roger, of Salvington Hill, Worthing, said he was surprised he was not going to need at least a night in hospital to recover from the replacement.

Instead, he was picked up by his partner Theresa and was back home the same afternoon managing any post-operation pain with tablet painkillers.

The implant used was an Attune Primary Total Knee System, designed in by medical experts from Britain and the USA.

Dr Lewis said: “Knee replacement technology has improved tremendously in the last few years meaning the amount of time a patient has been hospitalised after the operation has gradually reduced”.

“However, I can see the time when a walk-in walk out’ surgery replacement is almost commonplace.

“Clearly it will always depend on the patient and their circumstances, but with fit and active people such as Mr North this is something I think we will be seeing much more of in the future.”
