Worthing church accused of ‘intimidation’ at abortion clinic

AN ABORTION clinic has accused members of a Worthing church of intimidating women by showing graphic images of aborted foetuses and comparing it to the Holocaust.

The British Pregnancy Advisory Service (bpas) has criticised Worthing’s Jubilee Community Church for its role in the regular Abort67 protests, held outside Wistons Clinic, in Brighton.

Stories have emerged of women being shown images of aborted foetuses, called murderers and told they are likely to become drug addicts. Leaflets handed to the women have even compared abortion to the Holocaust.

Clare Murphy, from bpas, said: “I cannot reiterate enough our support for freedom of speech, and people’s right to campaign to overturn the abortion law.

“But we do believe there must be a more moral way to do this than by causing distress to individual women at a very difficult time in their lives.”

This week, Colin Nichols, leader of Jubilee Church, confirmed his church did support Abort67, with members of the congregation taking part in the protests.

He admitted giving sermons on the topic and agreed abortion was worse than the Holocaust, if based on the number of terminations carried out.

Colin added: “I agree with Abort67’s pro-life message and if people do not like that I can’t do anything about it as a Christian.”

Andy Stephenson, 37, church member and leader of Abort67, said: “This is way beyond Christianity – this is a human rights issue.”

Both men have refuted accusations made by the clinic of protesters “encircling and haranguing” women and calling them murderers.

Just my view but I think a Quick bypass of this world is the best thing that could happen to any human unless your born into wealth!! try living in the real world on this planet its not nice and a constant struggle all you have to look forwards to is a life of work or hardship, I for one wish most days that my father had pulled one off down the toilet rather than I had been born in this world...

I have met both guys mentioned in the article, at no point did they sound like the harbingers of hate nor people who would take the situation mentioned and lable people murderers. From what i can guage from meeting them and reading blogs and stuff they want to make people aware of what abortion is. My question is why are they causing such a stir? Is it that they are 'apparently' calling people murderers or is that we dont talk about abortion as a country, so when anyone has a black or white view of it is seen as an extremist? Maybe they approach is heavy handed but if they are saving lives, well done.

fat sausage. I am not sure anything I have read is moral high ground as i have read this debate fully. It is a matter of human conscience and nothing more. I for one could not kill a formed child under any circumstances. Those terrible circumstances of rape you describe can be managed through the adoption and other processes. There never was and never will be, justification for human led premature termination of a child's life and all that wonderful potential that has been cut off. If you wish to discuss the moral high ground of this subject, I am happy to do so. That will be on a completely different level to this.

so you take the moral high ground, and what if you had been raped would you still want to look at your baby with the eyes of a rapist looking up at you? and don't you think the streets of Worthing are overflowing with unwanted children as it is !! your the first to moan about higher taxes so I would suggest to you that are against it , you should pay for the upkeep of said unwanted baby's rather than us tax payers who have to keep shelling out ..

I only have a short view on this. It is wrong to destroy innocent lives who can't defend themselves. It is also wrong of Jubilee Church to conduct their campaign in this way. There is ample distress going on in the lives of these woman.

Whilst I am being moderated I thought i would express the same views in a less emotive manner, so the gist of my first post was basically a rant about us being in the 21st century, womens right to control thier own body, how views like that of the Jubilee Church are outdated by many decades, how people like the Jubilee Chruch and its members profess to 'love' but actually preach hate and how a good dose of the black plague should wipe out this outmoded and outdated relgion and its supporters, an old bio weapon to cleanse us of this aged, bigoted, interfering, we know best, do as we say or we will smite you in the name of our god ,hate mongers, or something like that.....

Herald Management. Your eagerness to control free speech at posting one can't be excused on the grounds of "some people find such comments offensive" Abortion is an offensive act of murder to other people. It would be better not to publish anything on the subject if your views are that strong because the pro-abortion group will scream "offensive" at anything they don't like. Therefore it's impossible for your paper to be neutral on this subject. That could easily attract a 'pro-abortion' label to the Herald.
