Regarding the letter entitled ‘New machines a nightmare’ on April 9, Adur and Worthing Councils would like to clarify that the car park referred to by Mr Thatcher is neither owned nor operated by Worthing Borough Council.

The car park is managed by CP Plus Ltd on 020 7431 4001.

Dominic O’Brien, the interim parking services manager for Adur & Worthing Councils, states: “The technology used by the car park in question involves ‘automatic number plate recognition’ of car registrations. The three multi-storey car parks which are run by the council use this technology as well and it is quite commonplace in many car parks throughout the country. The situation described by Mr Thatcher is understandably frustrating and as with all technology technical problems do arise from time to time, however the benefits of the council multi-storey car parks is that we retain a dedicated and customer-focused team of advisors who are able to help customers. The council has also decided to maintain an extremely attractive parking rate of £1 per hour for up to five hours in the car parks, which has proved popular. Worthing Borough Council absolutely values the goodwill and value brought to the town by shoppers, visitors and residents, and hopes that Mr Thatcher understands that this is the case.”
