Council's '˜duty' to provide public toilets

Save, save, save is all we hear from Arun District Council in their pathetic attempt to justify the closing of the only two public conveniences in Ferring.

ADC have failed to maintain these toilets up to the proper standard.

They have neglected to comply with the law (access for the disabled) in failing to provide access and proper toilet facilities for the disabled.

ADC are now faced with spending a certain amount of money to bring both of these toilet sites up to the required standard - which they are not prepared to do. Their answer is ‘get rid of them’.

A necessary public amenities part of the duty of care obligation which every local authority should provide. They ignore that and refuse to provide any replacement.

The ADC are failing to take into account the increasing revenue of council tax they are receiving from the thousands of extra homes being built throughout the area, especially in Ferring, where some are already occupied and how little ADC are spending in Ferring compared with other areas.

We are also told in the year 2019/20 the treasury will save billions of pounds from not having to pay into the EU fund.

Some of this will inevitably filter down to local authorities to improve local services.

ADC are being extremely short-sighted with their proposals to save £150,000 throughout the area by closing public toilets.

Parish councils should now lobby our MPs to report to the Minister for the Environment order to stop these ludicrous proposals of closure and instead insist that each local authority spends what is required to bring publications up to a proper modern requirement.
