REGARDING last week’s Herald (January 5) and Ian Hart’s subject of public houses in Montague Street.
I belive your mate Ricky is wrong stating that the Rose & Crown is and was the only pub in Montague Street.
I am nearly 74 years of age and as a teenager I knew all the pubs in Montague Street. (That sounds bad doesn’t it – ha, ha).
In 1966, there were six public houses with addresses in Montague Street. There were also two public houses on the corner of Portland Road, at the Montague Street end:-
Montague Street: 103, Victoria Inn; 121, White Hart; 149, The Montague; 171, Rose & Crown; 780, Buckingham Arms and 78, Kings Arms. Portland Road: The Albion and The Spaniard. New Street: The New Street Inn. To check the above I have checked with Kellys directory of 1966. Ricky owes you a pint!
What about the Seagulls, then?
