Shops should help

IT is admirable that suggestions are being made to have recycling bins for plastic carrier bags in places other than supermarkets as suggested by Saskia Rann (Herald, March 8).

However, this is shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted.

Shops should not be allowed to dispense plastic bags willy nilly. It is time people became more responsible and remembered to take their shopping bags with them when they visit the shops.

If they do not, then a charge should be made. Plastic bags do not rot down in land fill sites for years and recycling is only an answer to people’s thoughtlessness and laziness.
