Trees bring green balance

Oli Poole (Business pages, 7 July) claims 'neutral and balanced' coverage of the Montague Centre proposals in the 'Herald'. I didn't detect it.

He says trees should not stand in the way of development, but that’s akin to killing native Americans because they stood in the way of the railroad and gold prospectors.

Trees are living things of ecological value to the environment, and these sycamores bring a green balance to a commercial area that is a pleasure to walk down, busy but not overcrowded.

After the failure of the Guildbourne Centre across the road, and Teville Gate, one wonders whether the planning department has any idea what makes a town centre function well.

lt’s less about tax, commercial profit and inward investment than proper scale and the visitors’ sense of comfort.

Do we need a hub of top eateries; is a glass kiosk really going to bring them in – particularly young people whose interests are probably elsewhere?

If regeneration is required, Union Place has the space, the pressing need, and adjacent car parks, easier access, and a theatre.
