DEBATE: Has Worthing been put at risk?

THOSE walking along the western promenade at Worthing today, a week after the storm, like me must have been horrified to see how much of the shingle had disappeared and how close that part of the town came to being flooded.
Its possible one more puff and the shingle defences in many places would have completely failed.

Yes the storm had coincided with one of the highest tides of the year but it wasn't that exceptional, so what had nearly caused a catastrophe?

Was it something to do with the timber still on the beach?

Although some the beach is still cordoned off it was possible to look more closely at other places where the single had disappeared and a pattern was evident, it was worse at places where the dumper trucks used for moving the timber had been climbing the shingle after driving along the sand.

Clearly they had carved out a channel for the sea to enter and erode the defences.

As others and I have commented before, the saga of the timber removal has been a disgrace, in fact nearly a disaster for the town had the sea invaded.

Surely there must be an inquiry to find out who is to blame for this incompetence, incompetence that came so close to putting parts of the town in grave peril.

On a happier note it's clear someone has listened to all the criticism as lorries have been removing the timber away from the beach - as originally suggested - but how long will it be before ALL the splintered pieces are found?

I guess only the herald could pose such a question "has worthing been put at risk" anyone with an IQ above ZERO would have the correct answer with such an inept, mismanaged, over paid council such as WBC there can only be one answer.

I attened the seafront on the first Sunday when the timber turned up and spoke (ON CAMERA!) to the Receiver of slavage?? when asked would it be days or weeks to clear the beach the lady in question replied weeks i can only presume she has not got the concept that follow 4 weeks we then go into months! which again anyone with an IQ deserving of the position she holds would realise it would be months and many of them, due to the inept way they were trying to first of all STOP the local`s from helping them selves to the now waisted forests they turned into wood.

I must addmit a had a nice little chuckle when i saw the signs the council have now put up asking thge rate payers to pick up any peices of would including splints into the mesh bins!!! oh and to wear the correct foot wear on the beach, also not to excersise ones dogs on the stones due to the mess the contractors have left behind! i also see they have abandond the port-a-loo just east of splash point which is now on its side, and what a waste of good barriers that have also been abandond! maybe ive got it wrong and they have all done a fantastic job including the herald on it coverage which i find weake at best!!! sorry for any typos

I could go on and on about this for weeks but I won't !

Just seems incredible that after all this time there is still timber littering Worthing beach, now including large, dangerous splinters as a result of the recent storm.

Living in East Worthing and having walked into town today along the seafront,I did'nt see a single workman/contractor anywhere in sight. The place resembles a battlefield and looks like it's going to take many more months to clean up.

What the hell are Worthing Borough Council up to ? Easter's a few days away and we were told that the mess would be cleared up by then - yeah right !!Good lord a pig has just flown past.

Dear me David, can't you read? It's a letter from the Green Party and a rhetorical question!!! I do worry about the quality of some of the comments that appear here sometimes.
In answer to John Tyler's question, I doubt very much that the wood will have any affect on flooding but we're bound to have some splinter casualty before the summer's through.

Keith you are a man 'talking' sense. It's the rusty wheels of Government moving slower than a snail. I do feel sorry for the workers who have to pick it all up again.

Dear 3 i think i can read better than you can see to ask such an obvious question and if as you say its posed by the greens then you have a zore chance to ever govern still every cloud etc. well i leave you with a final though 3 maybe you should start a "splinter" group ?

I THINK YOU MAY FIND THE SPLINTERS ARE CAUSED BY 10-20 TON TRUCKS DRIVING OVER 10-20LB PIECES OF TIMBER ? IF IT WAS ONE OF MY DRIVERS I`D SACK HIM! AFTER GIVING ALL THE LEGAL REQUIRED WARNINGS!! not sure if you can be sacked anymore for stupidity or ineptness? if you could we`d lose 99.9% of WBC not to mention the whole goverment! ok 99.9% keep up the good work readers and dont forget to give generously onn your next council tax demand.

I'm confused now, these posts make no sense. Only two people responded and the letter's quite obviously signed by a Green Party person. Am I missing something here?

Worthing Watchman,

Demolition seems to be the key word in this timber controversy. Demolition proudly displayed on the contractors vehicles. Demolition of the timber by operators using cranes to repeatedly hammer down the timber piles so they could drive on top of it. Demolition by the dumper drivers of the shingle sea defences by spinning all six wheels and cutting channels for the sea to enter while trying to climb the beach with trashed once usable wood. And finally a hapless council who have Demolished any reputation of a well run town.

Sorry I forgot. Demolition even of the flagpole that once stood proudly on the promenade opposite Heene Terrace to give warning of dangerous beach conditions and where to get life saving equipment.

worthing watchman i,m sure the demolition by the council of worthing town centre started long before the wood washed up or even before they sold us out to NCP (Nice Cash Profit) long, long ago and it will continue to be so as we seem to be a nation of people who now love to ban everything in sight and happy to be run as a dictatorship.
