Her photographs show the flames consuming the planks piled up ready for chipping, and the rising smoke in the early morning.

Whilst I would never condone the reckless actions of the arsonists on Saturday night, the results of the blaze (very little wood where was once a huge pile) does beg the question of whether this might actually be the right way to get rid of the timber.

I live in Heene Terrace and the ineptitude of the council in dealing with the problem is staggering. Has, for example, anyone stopped to think that the 'green' solution to the problem is not 'green' at all? The cost of the fuel and the maintenance of the huge lorries, cranes and chippers performing the clear-up far outweighs the benefits of recycling the timber into bio-fuel.

The decision is clearly a financial one. Someone somewhere is filling their coffers while the residents of Worthing are taken advantage of.
