KEEN athlete Ellie Poland has been crowned the 2008 Worthing Rotary Carnival Princess — after being entered into the competition as a surprise.
Ellie, 10, of Southfield Road, Broadwater, had no idea her mum, Penny, and 16-year-old sister, Hannah, had entered her into the competition until she saw her photograph in the Worthing Herald.

Ellie beat off competition from all the young hopefuls to be crowned princess and win the chance to lead the carnival procession on Bank Holiday Monday, August 25, and help the mayor, Christine Brown, present prizes to float winners.

Ellie said: "I am really happy. I am really looking forward to meeting the mayor."

A pupil at Thomas A' Becket Middle School in Tarring, Ellie is a keen athlete and often represents the school in tournaments.
