FIELD Place First School marked the end of an era last week when its head teacher of 11 years retired.
Frances Dunkin led the school in Nelson Road, Maybridge, into being recognised by Ofsted inspectors as a "good school with many outstanding features".
Her philosophy of always putting the interests of the children first made a difference to hundreds of children during her time at the school.
Linda Bateman, who will be acting head teacher next term, said: "I know I speak for all the many people who have worked with and been influenced by Frances when I say she will be greatly missed.
"Her legacy to the school is one of child-centred education where every child matters and children are equipped with skills for life. She will be a very hard act to follow."
Mrs Dunkin was seen out in style at the end of term, with children and staff dressed as pirates.
The costumes helped the children to scupper the chances of a band of pirates who had threatened to steal the school's gold star book, which lists the children who have received a special award for their hard work.
Children drew treasure maps, followed clues and enjoyed a pirates' picnic with their parents to help mark Mrs Dunkin's retirement.
A special assembly was also held and she was presented with gifts made by the pupils.
