A PRIMARY school became Antarctica for the day as part of a special project.
Clapham and Patching Primary School, in Clapham, hosted an educational Antarctica day, having studied the topic since September.

Pupils have learnt about the continent's geography, penguins, the tilt of the earth, global warming and the history of Antarctica.

Before the Christmas break, the school had special visitors from the British Antarctica Survey, including Dr Liz Thomas, a member of the research centre in Antarctica.

Dr Thomas told the children about the effects of global warming and her experiences before showing youngsters some 4,000-year-old ice.

Later in the day, the children had the chance to dress up in a range of Antarctica-themed costumes from penguins to ice.

There was fun for the parents too when they took on the children in a quiz.

Teacher Claire Cossins said pupils had learnt a lot from the visit and ended the day feeling like experts themselves.

Following the educational day, the children wrote letters describing the effects of global warming and telling people what they can do to help.

Read what they had to say below:

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to you about global warming and how to stop it.

We have been learning about it at school and I would be highly grateful if you to publish this and put it in the newspaper.

Not only would this please our parents but it would get people to think about global warming and try to reduce the amount of pollution made by cars and trucks.

Global warming is when all the pollution caused by all of these vehicles goes up into the atmosphere, making the atmosphere thicker and the sun's rays can get in but can't get out very well.

Then they will end up scorching the earth.

Global warming could be saved by quite a lot of things.

Like stop using cars as much and try to use public transport or use your bicycle.

Stop leaving things on stand-by but turn them off by the plug.

Don't fill your bottle too much if you only want one cup.

Global warming affects Antarctica massively, because if the world is warming up then the ice shelves will melt, therefore sea levels will rise by five to six meters.

That is why we why we need to stop the world from heating up.

It also affects Antarctica because warm waters are killing krill and that will end up affecting the population of Antarctica.

Yours faithfully
M. Maynard

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to ask you to publish this letter on behalf of our class to inform your readers of the effect of global warming.

We have been studying global warming as part of our topic on Antarctica and as we all play a part to help save the earth.

We though it would be a good idea to write to you so your readers can think carefully about the following.

Around the world are gasses to stop us getting too hot, but we make too much of it, so the sun's rays can't get back out.

We cause all of this by driving to places that you could walk to, going on too many planes a year, leaving things on standby, filling the bottle up too much, cutting down trees and turning the heating up when you don't need to.

To stop it we can stop cutting down trees, turn down the heating, don't go on planes as much, take a bike or walk and don't turn things off by the remote but turn it off by the button.

If we do this we can save the whole world and stop wild animal habitats being destroyed.

Global warming is affecting Antarctica because it has to be frozen all the time, but if global warming starts then it will melt.

If Antarctica or the ice begins to melt then sea levels will rise six metres and we will be flooded.

Also phytoplankton, zooplankton and krill can't live in warm waters so fish, penguins, whales and lots of other animals can't get food and may become extinct.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and we hope you could publish our points so other people understand how global warming is affecting our future.

Yours faithfully
Cammy Ben

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to tell you about the affects of global warming around the world and how to stop it.

We have been studying this subject at school.

We hope that you will be interested in publishing this letter to warn all of your readers about he danger of the global warming, what contributes towards it and how to stop it.

We have loads of protective gasses surrounding the earth and these are cause by people wasting electricity and taking unnecessary car journeys.

The sun's rays can't get back out of the gases because the gases are getting thicker.

To help stop global warming we can recycle, only take necessary car trips, don't cut down trees and not fly abroad so often.

Antarctica is melting, so as it melts it means the sea will rise by six metres, also phytoplankton, and zooplankton are disappearing so that means that krill are disappearing and everything that eats them will die like penguins, whales and even seals.

Thank you for taking your time to read this letter.

Yours faithfully
Miss M Bishop

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing in the hope that you publish this letter.

In school we have been learning about global warming and we hope, if you publish this letter, that other people will know about the affects of global warming.

What is Global Warming?

Global warming is when all our gasses and fumes go up into the atmosphere and the sun's rays can't get out again because the gases are getting thicker.

What can we do about it?

We can stop taking unnecessary journeys and walks instead, don't leave things on standby and don't have the heating on too high.

How is global warming affecting Antarctica?

Global warming affects Antarctica by melting the ice and as a result sea levels could rise.

The krill population is declining so that means everything that eats the krill will decline as well. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter.

Yours Faithfully
Rebecca Jane Krupa

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to tell you the effects of global warming and how to stop it.

We have been studying this subject in school and we are very concerned.

We hope you will publish this letter so we can let more people know about the danger of global warming and how stop to it.

We have lots of protective gasses surrounding the earth.

The sun's rays pass through the gasses and heat up the earth.

But the gasses are getting thicker so the sun's rays can't get back out.

The gasses are getting thicker because of people taking unnecessary car journeys, cutting down trees and factories and using too much energy.

To stop global warming here are some simple things we can do to help prevent it.

Turn your washing machines to 30 degrees and turn your TV off at the plug not with your remote.

Also only fill your kettle up with the amount of water you need.

We hope you can do a couple of these things as it will make a big difference.

Antarctica is one of the continents most affected by global warming.

It is melting.

If all of the ice shelves melt then the sea will rise by six metres.

Also the animal population will decrease; the krill can't live in the warm waters.

Krill is the most important animal in the food chain, so if they die so will all the other animals.

I hope your readers will act after reading this letter.

Yours faithfully
Miss Jude Cross

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to you about global warming because my class has been studying about it so we want to try and help to make the world better.

Global warming is caused by car's petrol because they are letting out CO2 and the CO2 is making the gas layer bigger and bigger so the sun's rays can get in but can't get out.

In order to help global warming, we need to try to not use cars as much and use a bike or public transport instead.

We can also recycle, not leave things on standby and buy modern fridges.

Global warming is affecting Antarctica because krill is getting more affected by the warming water so the krill can't live in hot water so penguins and whales can't eat because there won't be any krill left.

Also Antarctica is melting so the sea is rising and could possibly, if nothing is done, rise by six metres.

Yours faithfully
Daniel Macintyre

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to ask you to publish this letter on behalf of our class to inform your readers of the effects of global warming.

This is caused by car fumes which make gasses thick around the earth and the sun's rays which can get out of the atmosphere.

Just recycle a lot more than usual and turn off light when not in use in the room.

Also turn washing machines to 30 degrees C.

Global warming is melting all the ice bergs and the more that they melt; the higher the sea levels rise.

All of the krill will die from being in warmer water.

Then other creatures like whales will have nothing to eat.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I hope that you could publish our points so other people understand how global warming is affecting our future.

Yours faithfully
Harvey

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to tell you the effect of global warming and how to stop it.

We are hoping you could publish this letter so everyone knows how to stop global warming and I would like to warn every one of the dangers it will cause to the world.

We have lots of protective gases around our world so we don't get too hot or too cold, but because we go on lots of aeroplanes and cars we are letting off more pollution.

We are making the gasses around the world thicker so when the sun's rays come and his the earth most of sun's rays can't get back out.

To help prevent global warming, we can not fill our kettle right to the top, do not cut down trees, not drive so many cars, don't leave things on standby and factories shouldn't use so much energy.

Global warming is affecting Antarctica because it is melting all the ice-burgs and when the ice-burgs melt the sea rises and if we don't do something about it the sea will rise too much and it could flood the earth.

Also the sea will warm up; the krill will struggle to survive so creatures have nothing to eat.

Yours faithfully
Lilia Martin-Richards.

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to ask you to publish this letter on behalf of our class and to inform your readers of the effects of global warming.

Global warming are gasses that are warming up the earth, they come from car fumes, aeroplanes and motorbike fumes.

To stop using electric things and leaving on standby try to stop using cars for short journeys.

Because of global warming Antarctica is melting and the water levels are getting high.

Mikey

P.S Thank you for taking time to read this letter and note that you could publish our points so other people understand how global warming is affecting our future.

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to ask you to publish this letter on behalf of our class to inform your readers of the effects of global warming.

It is worse because we are letting too many gasses to go into the air as the sun's rays cannot get back out of the layers of gas.

Turn down your washing machines down to 30 degrees instead of a lot more.

Turn off your Game Boy charge and turn the light of when you leave a room.

The sea levels are rising because global warming is melting the ice in Antarctica so ice bergs are melting and krill are frying which mean there be no more home for whales.

Yours faithfully
Dominic Sheley

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to ask you to publish this letter on behalf of our class to inform readers of the effect of global warming.

Global warming is raised by gas making a big cloud around the world.

The sun's rays are coming in but they find it hard to get out.

Gasses are formed by motorbikes, aeroplanes and power stations.

Do not make unnecessary journeys, do not leave light on and always recycle.

Global warming is melting the ice and the sea is rising. Krill is dying so animals in Antarctica are going hungry.

Yours faithfully
George

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to you in the hope that you publish this letter.

In school we have been studying Antarctica and global warming.

Global warming is caused by cars, factories, buses and things like that.

They cause the gasses around the world to get thicker so when the sun's rays come in they get trapped and so the earth gets warmer and warmer.

How is this affecting Antarctica?

Krill is dying so lots of animals are dying of hunger.

The earth is getting warmer so the ice is melting and that means the sea levels are rising.

We can help stop global warming by not going on so many holidays, don't take unnecessary car journeys, recycling more and turn your telly off properly and not by standby

Yours faithfully
Miss Lauren Ann Hines

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to ask you to publish this letter on behalf of our class to inform your readers of the effects of global warming.

Global warming is caused by not turning of our phones, TVs, lights and computers.

These things create lots of waste and CO2 which goes into the air, making a thick layer of gas around the world.

The sun's rays get stuck in the atmosphere heating up the world.

Don't leave your phones, TVs, lights and computers on.

Turn your washing machine down to 30 degrees and recycle so trees are not cut down.

Antarctica is melting because of global warming.

If this keeps up, Antarctica will melt and sea levels will rise possibly six metres.

Thank you for taking the tine to read this letter and hope that you could publish our points so other people understand how global warming is affecting our future.

Yours faithfully
K. L. Gerry

Dear Sir/Madam

Global warming is cause by all the cars, vans and planes making thick gasses around the world.

The sun's rays come in but some aren't going out.

We can stop using cars for short journeys and not go on lots of planes. Also we could stop leaving things on standby.

Global warming is affecting all parts of the world and krill is declining so lots of animals in Antarctica cannot eat. Antarctica is melting and the sea is rising.

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to ask you to publish this letter on behalf of our class to inform your readers of the effects of global warming.

Global warming is caused by the amount of gas surrounding the earth forming a round pack of thickness.

It is getting thicker because all of the poisonous gases and pollution form cars.

We can make sure that when we go to bed we turn off the plug sockets and take out the plug.

We should take out the plug and when you go out of a room turn off the lights. Don't leave things on standby.

Global warming is melting the ice and causing sea levels to rise. The krill are dying and causing other creatures to die too like penguins because they are hungry.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and we hope that you could publish our points so other people understand how global warming is affecting our future.

Yours faithfully
Sophia
