PEOPLE in Adur have been urged to make sure they don't get a shock in bed – by having electric blankets tested.
West Sussex County Council Trading Standards Service is holding free test events this week and next.
On Thursday, October 16, tests will be held at Summers Close, St Aubyns Crescent, Fishergate.
And on Tuesday, October 21, tests will be carried out at Milward Court, in Wilmot Road, Shoreham.
The tests are being carried out in partnership with the fire service and Adur District Council.
Anyone wanting a blanket tested must book an appointment. Call 01243 642124.
Last year, Trading Standards tested 734 blankets countywide – a shocking 267 failed. Fifty-three were considered dangerous and 214 were not recommended for further use.
Clive Williams, Chairman of Adur County Local Committee, said: "We want everyone in Adur to sleep safely this winter. But old electric blankets often become worn and can cause fires that could be potentially fatal. So we are urging everyone in the district to take advantage of this free service."
Alison Wheeler, Trading Standards Team Leader, said: "If your electric blanket is more than 10 years old it is strongly recommended you replace it.
"The more modern blankets tend to be more flexible, leaving them liable to rucking. Care should always be taken when fitting. If the ties are not used correctly when fitting, the electrical wiring within the blanket can suffer from high levels of mechanical stress."
