Findon skipper Meaney has league title ambition after Village Cup exit

DESPITE the disappointment of being knocked out of the National Village Cup on Sunday, a league win on Saturday has Findon Cricket Club captain Barry Meaney believing a title push is not beyond them this season.

A fourth consecutive win in Division 3 West of the Sussex League on Saturday, a comprehensive 112-run over Middleton, who started the day second, has ensured Findon remain top of the pile, thanks to a devastating bowling display from James Iago, who claimed 8-47.

Findon were also without four key players for the match, including Meaney, before they exited the Sussex semi-finals of the National Village Cup on Sunday.

Meaney said: “It’s a bit of a contrast in spirits, really. Saturday’s result was fantastic, especially as we were missing some players but those who came in stepped up, which was a real positive.

“We were very disappointed on Sunday, though. No disrespect to Rottingdean, but it was a game we were looking to win. From what I hear, we lost the game in the first 20 overs. We didn’t bowl well and made a number of errors in the field.

“It means we can concentrate on the league. We have had a fantastic start, and I know it’s early but if we’re still there at the halfway stage, we’ll be looking to go on and win it.

“I have said to the boys that it is all about how we bounce back from Sunday’s defeat now.”

On Saturday, Bradley Bridson (86) and Dan Bridson (60), put on a second-wicket stand of 134, while stand-in captain Felix Jordan hit 45 and Ben Coulson made 18 as Findon scored 230-7.

In response, Middleton managed just 118 in 32.5 overs, thanks to Iago’s fine display.

On Sunday, Rottingdean won the toss and finished on 183-8 after opening batsmen Najmus Jamil (67) and Henry Ledde (44) had put on 130 for the opening wicket.

Bradley Bridson again started well in Findon’s response with 47, while Jordan made 29, but they finished three runs short of victory.
